somewhere in between.
We are rich or poor, or somewhere in
between. We are Jewish, Christian,
Buddhist, atheist, or have other faith
communities.
We are straight or gay.
We have strong bodies or are differently

| In October of 2004, individuals representing various government entities, organizations and communities were invited to
participate in workshops co-sponsored by the Port Madison Suquamish Tribe, Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe and the North Kitsap School District.
We shared our observations, stories, concerns and hopes regarding multicultural issues in
North Kitsap. We reviewed the history of the school/tribal relations (1995-2004) and
explored the rationale for establishing an affinity or work group.
In December 2004, we met again and affirmed
our commitment to continue this community dialogue on human difference.
We agreed upon some characteristics we want to see in community life. We identified
our community strengths, weaknesses, barriers, challenges, helping
and hindering forces, criteria for success and next steps for strategy and action.
In 2005, we decided to form an organization, ask for sponsorships and initiate
projects for North Kitsap.
During 2006 we have developed our first project, the Multicultural and Diversity
AwarenessCommunity Initiative; offered community
support for Poulsbo's African-American "Miss
Viking Fest"; were present at community
celebrations; and held a Community
Leaders Workshop in October. |
